Laser Surface Hardening

LASER SURFACE HARDENING is a process which gives a hard, wear-resistant surface for most steels and cast irons. In laser surface hardening the workpiece surface is heated quickly by laser beam up to the austenite range (800-1200 °C depending on the material). The heat is conducted from the process region to the surrounding cold material and after the laser beam has moved forward the heated area is rapidly cooled near to ambient temperature. Due to this so-called self-extinguishing the surface gets a martensitic microstructure.
